Serbia Stun Portugal, Playoffs in March, Draw November 26

Fulham’s Mitrovic scored in the 90th minute as Serbia stunned Portugal in Lisbon with a 2-1 win on Sunday night to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Portugal will have to go into the playoff route seeking to qualify. It is their fourth all-time playoff and disappointing considering how much talent is on this squad.

Mitrovic came off the bench to score the winner with a header after the defense failed to clear a cross.

Renato Sanches put Portugal in front with a right-footed shot in the box only two minutes into the match after Bernardo Silva stole possession outside the area.

Here is the playoff set up:

A total of 12 teams from UEFA compete in the play-offs. The 10 World Cup qualification group runners-up are joined by the best two UEFA Nations League group winners who did not finish in the top two of the World Cup qualification stage.

These 12 teams are divided into three four-team paths, with each path consisting of semi-finals and a final (1 leg each). The winners of the three finals advance to the World Cup.
