With the loss of Lucas Verissimo (knee) out the rest of the season, there have been reports that Benfica are seeking to add a defender in the January winter market.
The Daily Mail reports that seldom used Manchester United defender Phil Jones could be the solution.
Interim United manager Ralf Rangnick has already confirmed he is ready to let players leave next month as he believes United’s squad is big enough, so any potential offer from Benfica may be considered for Jones.
Jones has not played in the past 23 months, first through injury (knee) and none at all since returning.
He has contract with United through 2023.
Benfica have been using Morato, Andre Almeida and Ferro in Verissimo’s absence.
Depending on what you read, Benfica are not seeking to spend lots of money to bring in a defender, so a loan is a good option.
