Benfica, Jorge Jesus Mutually Agree to Part Ways, Nélson Veríssimo Takes Over and Hosts First Training

Benfica and Jorge Jesus have mutually agreed to end their contract.

B team manager Nélson Veríssimo will take over the role until the end of the season. It will be the second time that Veríssimo takes over after he did the same when Bruno Lage left.

Last week’s loss at Porto, as well as reported issues with players all played a factor in the break up. Benfica are still alive in three competitions (Liga, Taca da Liga, Champions League) and only four points behind Sporting CP/FC Porto.

There was a press conference earlier today where Rui Costa and Jesus both spoke and took no questions. Video below, as well as Benfica’s official statement they posted on the English language section of their website.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica informs that, by mutual agreement between the parties, Jorge Jesus is no longer Benfica’s coach.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica SAD thanks Jorge Jesus for all the work done over the last year and a half and wishes him all the best for the future. The club also adds that it will fulfill all contractual obligations until the end of the existing employment relationship or until Jorge Jesus and his coaching staff make a new professional commitment.

Nélson Veríssimo takes over today as head coach of Benfica’s first team until the end of the season.
