Benfica, Santa Clara Join Sporting in Taca da Liga Final 4; Boavista x SC Braga Play for Last Spot

Two more clubs have punched their tickets to qualify for the Taca da Liga Final 4 next month in Leiria.

Benfica needed three goals and they scored just that winning 3-0 to defeat SC Covilha.

They received goals from Seferovic and a brace from Darwin to take control of the match to advance and win Group A (video below).

Benfica will play the Group B winner Boavista or SC Braga on January 25.

Covilha, who recently hired former Maritimo and Sporting CP manager Leonel Pontes, knew it would be a tough task, but Pontes said he would use the match to continue to instill his philosophy into his new squad as they try to avoid relegation. They currently sit in 16th place in the second division.

Benfica lined up with Leite; Tomás Araújo, Ferro, Morato; Everton, Meïté, Taarabt, Gil Dias; Pizzi, Gonçalo Ramos, Seferović and overpowered them for the win. Tomás Araújo made his 1st team debut.

In the other match tonight, Rio Ave had the huge task of needing to defeat FC Porto by three goals to overtake Santa Clara in the group standings but that did not happen as Porto won 1-0 behind a goal from Pepê.

Six players – Claudio Ramos, Bernardo Folha, Gonçalo Borges, João Marcelo, Zé Pedro, João Mendes – made their 1st team debuts tonight for FC Porto.

Santa Clara wins Group D and advances to play Sporting CP on January 26 in the second semifinal in Leiria.

The last spot will be determined on Thursday night in Bessa between Boavista (3 points) and SC Braga (1 point). Boavista only need a draw. Braga needs to win.
