Benfica Wins 7th Straight in Liga, SC Braga Beats AVS, Tondela Back Up Top in 2nd Division

It was another busy Sunday in Portugal in the first and second divisions.

Benfica won their 7th straight Liga match winning 2-0 at Arouca. An own goal in the first half and a Di Maria penalty kick in the second half was enough for the three points up North for the Eagles.

The victory was also their fourth straight overall since their disappointing Champions League loss in Munich.

Benfica now trails Sporting by five points in the table but it feels closer as they have played one less match (Nacional).

Di Maria’s current form is exactly what Benfica needed after replacing Roger Schmidt and Lage has brought stability and excitement back to the Luz.

Estoril Praia defeated Famalicão 2-1 at home earlier on Sunday. They jumped out to a 2-0 after 30 minutes and hung on to win their first Liga match since October 25.

SC Braga won 1-0 at AVS on a goal by Gabri Martinez that was assisted by Andre Horta. Braga out-shot their hosts 21-7 to go 5th in the table and one point behind fourth place Santa Clara.

Down in the second division, Tondela is the big story winning 2-1 against Paços de Ferreira to go top of the table.

Penafiel drops to second place in the second division after a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Mafra.
