UPDATED WITH QUOTES: FC Porto Stays Close to Benfica, Pepe Injured, Conceicao Gets 1st Win in Alvalade

FC Porto earned a big three points tonight in Alvalade to stay within four points of Benfica after Week 15

FC Porto scored first on a long ball pass from Corona finding Marega, who managed to avert a charging Maximiamo to score early in the sixth minute.

Acuna tied it right before the half beating Marchesin in the box after getting a well-placed pass from Vietto.

Porto struck back in the 73rd minute with Soares heading in a goal for the 2-1 lead on a corner kick. It was the first goal by a Porto striker in Alvalade since 2010.

The win gives Conceicao his first three points in Alvalade.

FC Porto have now won away to both Benfica and Sporting for the first time since 2002. Also, first Porto Liga win in Alvalade since 2002.

“Congratulations to both teams, the officials and fans for a great show,” said Conceicao. “Sporting had chances at start of the second half. Champions know how to weather these tough moments.”

The loss by Sporting probably ends their hopes for a Top Two finish as they now concentrate on other competitions. The long-shot is winning Europa to get a Champions League spot for next season.

“My players know what I will tell them,” said Silas “We shouldn’t have suffered that first goal in that way. We worked on that, we knew it could happen. Until Porto’s second goal, we were the best team on the pitch. We lost, but we were the best out there.”

Benfica won up north on Saturday night at Vitoria Guimaraes 1-0 on a goal by Cervi. The road win was Lage’s 16th straight as a Liga manager, which ties the all-time record also held by his predecessor Rui VItoria.

SC Braga won 7-1 at Belenenses SAD in a stunning debut as manager for Ruben Amorim.
