Second Division Torreense Upset Sporting CP to Win First Taca de Portugal, Also Qualify for Europa League

Second-division Torreense stunned Taca holders Sporting CP with an extra-time penalty to win the Taca de Portugal and claim the first major trophy in the club’s 109-year history.

Kevin Zohi fired Torreense ahead after just three minutes, but 18-time Taca champions Sporting levelled early in the second half through their top scorer, Luis Suarez.

The match turned dramatically in extra time when Sporting left-back Maxi Araujo was sent off for conceding a penalty. Cape Verde international Stopira calmly converted to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory for the underdogs from Torres Vedras.

This is the first time in Portugal that a club from the second division has won the Taça de Portugal.

The triumph also secures Torreense a direct place in next season’s Europa League.

Torreense’s only previous Portuguese Cup final appearance came in 1956, when FC Porto beat them.

They could yet crown a remarkable season with promotion to the top flight. Their promotion play-off against Casa Pia is 0-0 heading into Thursday’s second leg.

Sporting CP finished the season without a trophy, but they did get good news on Sunday as they learned they had qualified directly for the Champions League, thanks to Aston Villa finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
