Sporting CP, with the exception of the Super Cup, have looked unstoppable this season.
Ruben Amorim then took the job at Manchester United and now all of a sudden Sporting can’t seem to win without him.
Sporting tonight suffered their first Liga of loss of the season after 12 matches and their first home Liga loss since February of 2023.
The Liga race is truly back on if FC Porto and Benfica win their matches tomorrow and Monday.
João Pereira is all of a sudden under pressure after an ugly loss to Arsenal and then the loss tonight to Santa Clara, both at home.
Sporting felt they should have received two penalty kick calls but both times they did not get the call. The foul on Catamo in the box is attracting the most attention.
Santa Clara sits in fourth place and are having a terrific season after being promoted. Vinicius scored the only goal in the 33rd minute for their first-ever win in Alvalade.
Santa Clara also solidified their hold of fourth place, which is bad news for SC Braga.
João Pereira has the potential to be a terrific manager but taking the job from a club Legend such as Ruben Amorim is a tough challenge. Most are willing to look past the ugly Champions League loss, but not at home in Liga.
Pereira will need time to instill his ideas and gain everybody’s confidence, but in Portugal you’re only as good as your last match result.
After the defeat to Arsenal, João Pereira made some changes to the XI, mainly in the defensive sector.
Due to the flu, Franco Israel was forced to give way to Vladan Kovačević; Zeno Debast, Matheus Reis and Geny Catamo filled the spots of Jeremiah St. Juste, Gonçalo Inácio and Maxi Araújo.
Daniel Bragança replaced Hidemasa Morita in the midfield.
The changes didn’t help.
Who is to blame for the two losses this week?
The players deserve some blame. They are the same players that Ruben Amorim used, and they have not shown up this week. Pereira also needs to make better decisions.
In the end, Santa Clara scored the only goal and is showing that they are one of the top five best teams in Portugal this season.
The Azores are a bunch of happy islands tonight.

For the first time since February 12, 2023 Sporting loses a Liga match at home in Alvalade.
The loss halts a streak of 22 straight home victories. It also ruins their perfect start to the Liga campaign that began with 11 Liga wins. João Pereira all of a sudden under pressure. https://t.co/kH9WxzofYo
